Selbstporträt mit Palette - Hand Signed

About

Hand-signed by the artist
The guiding principle behind Albert Oehlen’s art is the use of artistic freedom to not be boring. It comes as no surprise then that his art has considerably changed over time, leaving no two series entirely alike. The Self Portrait series by Albert Oehlen are a combination of 8 paintings dating back to 1983. Through each painting, Oehlen respectively alludes to the works of past masters, spanning from Picasso to de Chirico. By flaunting his versatility, Oehlen confirms his skill while leaving a shadow of doubt as to his intentions: homage or sardonic reinterpretations?

The Artist

Albert Oehlen

Albert Oehlen (b. 1954, Krefeld, Germany) is a German painter whose experimental practice has continually challenged the conventions of painting. Emerging in the 1980s alongside the German Neo-Expressionist movement, Oehlen developed a deliberately eclectic approach, combining abstraction and figuration with influences from advertising, graffiti, Surrealism, and computer-generated imagery.

Working across painting, collage, drawing, and digital imagery, Oehlen embraces contradiction, chance, and visual disruption. His celebrated series include the Grey Paintings, Computer Paintings, and Tree Paintings, reflecting his ongoing interest in pushing the possibilities of the medium. His work is held in major collections including MoMA, Tate, and the Guggenheim Bilbao.
