Sunburnt Leisure, Lasting Images
There are artists who document the world. And then there are artists who fundamentally change the way we see it.
For decades, Martin Parr turned his lens toward the rituals of modern life: crowded beaches, tourist attractions, leisure culture, consumption, excess, awkwardness, humor, and humanity in all its contradictions. His photographs transformed the ordinary into something unforgettable, balancing satire and tenderness with unmistakable visual intensity.
Today, THE SKATEROOM is honored to unveil one of the final collections personally approved by Martin Parr before his passing, developed in close collaboration with the Martin Parr Foundation and DMB.
Martin Parr x THE SKATEROOM
This collection carries a particular emotional weight for us. It was a project Martin was actively involved in during its development and one we all thought he would be around to see launch. Continuing this release together with the Martin Parr Foundation felt less like a decision than a responsibility: to celebrate the vitality, humor, and cultural sharpness that defined his work and legacy.
The collection features two iconic photographs translated into collectible skateboard editions: Benidorm (Goggles) and The Ocean Dome, Miyazaki, Japan, 1996. Two images that perfectly embody Parr’s singular gaze on contemporary leisure culture: absurd, beautiful, hyperreal, and deeply human.
In Collaboration with the Martin Parr Foundation
Originally, Martin Parr intended to hand-sign these editions himself.
Following his passing, and in consultation with the Martin Parr Foundation and the DMB production team, we chose to preserve the spirit of that intention through a bespoke authentication element created specifically for this release: a custom holographic sticker featuring Martin Parr’s portrait and signature, applied to every edition.
Rather than attempting to replace the absent gesture of the artist’s hand, this holographic seal serves as a tribute to his direct involvement in the project and as a lasting mark of authenticity tied to one of his final approved collaborations.
Each edition remains a celebration of Martin Parr’s unmistakable vision and enduring influence on contemporary photography.
