Jenny Holzer’s work is defined by her use of text. Whether questioning, describing, or lamenting a specific object or theme, her work’s true purpose is to agitate and disturb its audience at the core – a technique particularly effective when displayed in public spaces and mistaken for an advertisement. For this collaboration, it is not one of Jenny Holzer’s famous truisms that is put forward however, but a text selection by the artist from Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” – the very same work selected for Jenny Holzer’s contribution to the NYC AIDS Memorial.
