Rio’s Favelas get a skatepark

Coletivo Skate Maré is a volunteer-led grassroots movement that empowers youth within its community through skateboarding. Located at the heart of one of Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous favelas is Maré Favela Skatepark, a community-driven space for the empowerment of local kids. Skateboarding in Maré helps youth divert their focus from the negative aspects of life in the favela which is affected by extreme violence, and gives them something positive. Built in August 2019, to date Maré Favela welcomes 200 members, with 40 kids attending their sessions weekly. The skatepark has attracted visitors from afar, including professional skaters and even the young Olympic medalist Sky Brown.
