The Artist
Albert Oehlen
Albert Oehlen (b. 1954, Krefeld, Germany) is a German painter whose experimental practice has continually challenged the conventions of painting. Emerging in the 1980s alongside the German Neo-Expressionist movement, Oehlen developed a deliberately eclectic approach, combining abstraction and figuration with influences from advertising, graffiti, Surrealism, and computer-generated imagery.
Working across painting, collage, drawing, and digital imagery, Oehlen embraces contradiction, chance, and visual disruption. His celebrated series include the Grey Paintings, Computer Paintings, and Tree Paintings, reflecting his ongoing interest in pushing the possibilities of the medium. His work is held in major collections including MoMA, Tate, and the Guggenheim Bilbao.
