The Artist

Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey (b. 1970, Charleston, South Carolina) is an American artist, graphic designer, and activist whose bold visual language has become a defining force in contemporary street art. Rising to prominence through his 1989 André the Giant Has a Posse sticker campaign, Fairey developed a distinctive style combining graphic simplicity, political imagery, and references to propaganda, advertising, and popular culture.

Best known for his Obey Giant campaign and the iconic HOPE poster created for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, Fairey uses art to engage with themes of power, inequality, peace, and social justice. Working across murals, prints, paintings, and public interventions, his practice demonstrates the enduring influence of street art as a tool for communication and cultural commentary.
