Black Skate Kite,Gabriel OROZCO
This collaboration elaborates on an image of one of Gabriel Orozco’s most iconic works — Black Kites (1997) — which was originally conceived for Documenta X shortly after one of Orozco’s lungs collapsed in 1996. The experience of spending a week in the hospital inspired him to create something via “a very slow process.” Over the next few months he covered an entire human skull in a checkerboard grid made of graphite. The work embodies ideas of the memento mori and brings to mind questions of our human fate and mortality.

Gabriel OROZCO
Born in Veracruz, Mexico in 1962, Orozco’s work places him as one of the most significant artists of his generation since the early 90s. Orozco draws from the spontaneity and inspiration of his changing environments and currently divides his time mainly between Bali, Tokyo, and Mexico City. The artist gained his reputation through his exploration of drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, and later extending to painting. His work blurs the boundaries of art with everyday realities and often balances complex geometry with organic materials and elements of chance.
Orozco has had numerous international solo exhibitions most recently at the Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2016), the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan (2015) and the Moderna Museet, Sweden (2014). From 2009 – 2011 a major retrospective of his work traveled from the Museum of Modern Art, New York to the Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland, the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Tate Modern, London.
When initially approached by THE SKATEROOM, Gabriel Orozco conferred with his son who has recently taken up skateboarding. Simón— immediately enthusiastic by the idea of the collaboration—told his dad “please do it!”
Through our collaboration with Gabriel Orozco, we are donating 20% of the sales revenue to Free Movement Skateboarding. The funding will expand their program and allow them to reach a greater number of children within one of the refugee camps close to Athens.
Buying guide
“Printed Signature on the deck” refers to the printed signature of the artist included on the top-print. Most decks feature this printed signature, though some specified editions can also feature a hand signed artist signature.
We make a commitment to the social projects we fund: at least 10% of our revenue goes directly to them. Working with our partners, we help empower at-risk youth, build new skateparks and develop education facilities & resource programs. Since 2014, we have generated over $1,500,000 to support social projects around the world.
In 2019, we became a Certified B Corporation. THE SKATEROOM is also CO2 neutral, chooses to source its skateboard wood from certified sustainable forests, and uses water-based ink for its prints.

Direct exposure to sunlight might result in discoloration and damage to your editions. To avoid this, we strongly suggest hanging your art-decks away from direct natural light.
