Parmi les œuvres les plus colorées de Tuymans à ce jour, la peinture Eternity (2021) présente une forme sphérique qui se déploie comme un champ lumineux de couleur pure, évoquant les compositions de Mark Rothko ou de Kenneth Noland. Cependant, la surface imparfaite et irrégulière du dôme suggère une référence au monde réel : le dôme de verre conçu par Werner Heisenberg dans son laboratoire pour simuler les explosions de bombes à hydrogène. Physicien théoricien de renom, Heisenberg a dirigé le programme allemand d’armement atomique pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, même si l’on ignore encore s’il a contribué ou, au contraire, entravé cette cause.

Tuymans a souvent fait référence à l'histoire traumatique dans son œuvre ; cependant, le sujet de ces peintures n'est pas ces atrocités elles-mêmes, mais plutôt la manière dont elles sont intégrées au récit historique, ainsi qu'à la mémoire collective, à travers des images qui ont le potentiel d'être indéterminées, multivalentes et, en fin de compte, révélant un aperçu sous-jacent de l'humanité, mettant ici littéralement en avant la beauté dans la destruction.

About the Artist

Born in 1958 in Mortsel, Belgium, Luc Tuymans is one of the most important painters of his generation. His first major museum presentations were held in 1990 at the Provinciaal Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Ostend, Belgium, and the Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Ghent. In 1992, the artist participated in Documenta IX in Kassel, in addition to having a solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Bern, which helped cement his growing reputation in Europe. In 1994, Luc Tuymans: Superstition debuted at Portikus, Frankfurt, and traveled to David Zwirner, New York; the Art Gallery of York University, Toronto; The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; and Goldie Paley Gallery, Moore College of Art & Design, Philadelphia, establishing him as a major influential artist abroad. In 2001, the artist represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale to great acclaim. Tuymans lives and works in Antwerp.
