The Artist

Chéri Samba

Chéri Samba (b. 1956, Kinto M’Vuila, Democratic Republic of Congo) is a Congolese painter and a leading figure of popular painting in Kinshasa. After beginning his career as a sign painter and illustrator, Samba developed a distinctive style combining bold colors, clear lines, comic-inspired imagery, and handwritten text. His paintings transform scenes from everyday life into vivid reflections on society, politics, culture, and contemporary Africa.

Often placing himself within his compositions, Samba uses humor, satire, and direct commentary to engage viewers with subjects ranging from inequality and corruption to sexuality and identity. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Centre Pompidou, the Venice Biennale, and the Fondation Cartier, and is held in major collections including MoMA and the Centre Pompidou.
