Tuymans’s Language in a New Format

THE SKATEROOM is proud to announce a new collection created with Belgian artist Luc Tuymans, developed in collaboration with David Zwirner Gallery. Released alongside the Los Angeles exhibition The Fruit Basket, the editions will also be available to view and purchase at the gallery during the show.

This launch brings one of the most influential painters of our time into THE SKATEROOM’s edition format, translating Tuymans’s distinctive visual language into collectible skateboard artworks.

The Collection

The collection consists of four limited editions, each translating a key work into THE SKATEROOM’s signature format.

In addition, each artwork is available in an ultra-limited run of 10 hand-signed editions, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire works personally endorsed by the artist.

Painting in the Age of Screens

For more than three decades, Luc Tuymans has examined how images shape collective memory and perception. Rather than painting directly from life, he works from photographs, film stills, television images, and his own digital snapshots. The resulting paintings appear slightly blurred, drained of color, and suspended between clarity and disappearance.

Translating this language onto skateboard decks preserves the quiet intensity of the originals while introducing a new material context.

In Dialogue with The Fruit Basket exhibition

Presented at David Zwirner Los Angeles, The Fruit Basket continues Tuymans’s long-standing exploration of memory, historical imagery, and mediated perception. The exhibition reflects his distinctive approach: quiet compositions carrying psychological weight, rendered through muted palettes and deliberately restrained gestures.

By presenting the skateboard editions within the exhibition context, the project extends Tuymans’s work beyond the gallery walls while maintaining its conceptual integrity. The decks function as both autonomous objects and extensions of the exhibition’s visual vocabulary.

Art in the Public Realm

As with every THE SKATEROOM release, a portion of the proceeds from this collection contribute to social impact initiatives supporting skateboarding and education projects worldwide. The project reflects a shared belief between the artist, the gallery, and THE SKATEROOM: that art can circulate beyond traditional spaces and participate in broader cultural and social ecosystems.
