About the Project

Bringing kids ‘Back to School’ in Kabul

Skateistan is an award-winning international non-profit organization founded in 2007 by Oliver Percovich, to empower children in Kabul, Afghanistan through skateboarding & education programs. Today, Skateistan operates in Cambodia and South Africa, as well as multiple locations in Afghanistan. Skateistan’s innovative programs combine creative, arts-based education with the fun and freedom of skateboarding, giving children the opportunities to become leaders for a better world.

About Skateistan:

  • 2,700+ active students, including 175 children with disabilities
  • 5 locations worldwide
  • 150+ students have re-entered the national school curriculum after joining Skateistan’s programs

Kabul’s Skate School was Skateistan’s first facility construction. Built in 2009, it has been running as a figurehead of skate & education programs for over a decade, working with over 7,000 children to date. Despite the challenging times for security in the city, their Skate School has continued to provide fun, freedom and creative education for the local youth. Each year, around 60 students graduate from their Back-to-School program to enter public school. (Activity Report 2019)

About Kabul’s Skate School:

  • 500+ active students
  • 42% girls
  • 6 ethnicities represented in student body
  • 90% from low income backgrounds
  • 11 students with disabilities
  • 18 jobs for local people, including an all-female management team
