The skateboards

“Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist”

As one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Magritte’s heritage had an immense influence on pop and conceptual art and it still continues to inspire contemporary artists.

The Skateroom is excited to reveal our latest collaboration with the Fondation Magritte. Being based in Brussels, it is our honor to pay homage to the father of Belgian surrealism and to extend his art to the medium of skateboards, giving it an entirely new meaning – just like Magritte always played with context in his paintings. We are happy to share with you four editions of his recognizable oeuvre: Décalcomanie, Empire des lumières and Fils de l’homme.

“We are delighted and humbled to launch this 100% Belgian collaboration with the Fondation Magritte. We could not think of a better way to promote a new reality through the eyes of this true master of Surrealism…In the words of René himself: “Ceci n’est pas un skateboard!” says Charles-Antoine Bodson, Founder of The Skateroom

Through the sale of these editions, The Skateroom commits to donating 5% of the turnover to Skateistan.

René Magritte (1898 – 1967,  Belgium)

Considered as the father of the (Belgian) surrealism, René Magritte’s paintings challenge the observers’ preconditioned perceptions of reality. His mode of representation seems voluntarily neutral and academic, yet it helps to highlight a powerful work that questions reality and brings a new meaning to familiar objects and things we took for granted. Magritte’s body of work has directly influenced Pop Art and contemporary artists like John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha and Andy Warhol.
