Artist Bio

René François Ghislain Magritte (21 November 1898 – 15 August 1967) was a Belgian Surrealist artist. He became well known for creating a number of witty and thought-provoking images. Often depicting ordinary objects in an unusual context, his work is known for challenging observers’ preconditioned perceptions of reality.

As one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Magritte’s body of work heavily influenced Pop and contemporary artists like John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, and Andy Warhol, and continues to inspire contemporary artists to this day.

Collaboration info

When the opportunity to collaborate with the Fondation Magritte presented itself, we were honored to pay tribute to the father of Belgian Surrealism and to put a new spin to his art through the medium of skateboards. The Skateroom is grateful to present three editions of Magritte’s recognizable oeuvre: Décalcomanie, L’empire des lumières, and Le fils de l’homme.

“We are delighted and humbled to launch this 100% Belgian collaboration with the Fondation Magritte. We could not think of a better way to promote a new realithy through the eyes of this true master of Surrealism… In the words of René himself: ‘Ceci n’est pas un skateboard!’.” – Charles-Antoine Bodson, Founder of The Skateroom
