Desert Flood (Kai the marble cactus), Hand-signed,Claudia COMTE
The cactus is an ecological force: resilient and adaptive to the increasing aridity of land in many parts of the world. Carved in marble, the shape becomes an ultimate symbol of resistance and survival to inhospitable conditions. Camouflaged with a cartoonish connotation that is both joyful and optimistic, the cactus is inscribed in Claudia Comtes artistic vocabulary as the ultimate denunciation of the root causes of desertification.
Claudia Comtes practice is guided by a longstanding interest in teasing out the history and memory of biomorphic forms through traditional hand processes, industrial and machine technologies. At the heart of Comte’s work are serial sculptures inspired by organic morphologies playfully recomposed within fluid and immersive environments. Drawing on the powers of communication, knowledge and symbiosis between animal and plant life, Claudia Comte’s dynamic and shape-shifting objects pay testament to the intelligence and transformative capacities of the ecological world.
