If you walk into the Museum of Modern Art’s gift shop today, you’ll pass Keith Haring mugs and Yayoi Kusama snow globes before reaching a section dedicated to artist-designed skate decks.
Some artists are designing decks that challenge the skateboarding industry itself. Judy Chicago’s three editions for THE SKATEROOM feature thinly veiled references to female genitalia enhanced by pulsing, wave-like forms suggestive of erotic experience. The colors and motifs revisit Chicago’s seminal 1970s drawings, when she established herself as an artist challenging the male-dominated art world. By echoing the feminist work she made at the beginning of her career, Chicago similarly infused an activist spirit into the otherwise male-dominated skateboarding industry…
