Leaving Afghanistan: Three Women Starting New Lives after the Taliban
Over the eight years we’ve been funding Skateistan’s mission to educate young people around the world through skateboarding, a lot has changed. Immense growth, thousands of smiling faces, and even an Oscar-winning documentary. But no change has been so dramatic as the one that took place in August 2021, when Taliban forces seized control of Afghanistan once again. The Taliban is making the future of woman in Afghanistan uncertain.

Meeting Jago Stock, the 19-year-old filmmaker documenting Jamaica’s flourishing skate scene.
His two older siblings were born in India, a country that he’s visited often, and he never travels without a deck – or his camera. In June 2021, his twin passions came together in the most intense trip of his life: a six week volunteer placement in Jamaica. Arriving at Kingston’s new Freedom Skatepark (a Concrete Jungle Foundation project which THE SKATEROOM funded back in 2020), Jago started teaching photography, skating and set about filming for what would become the sensational Freedom To Flourish documentary. Had he imagined what community he would find growing in the midst of a global pandemic? We wanted to find out.
